In 2021, Kenvue was established as the healthcare and lifestyle subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. My team’s role was to implement and expand the new branding language in the digital realm.

Evoloution

The original “Academy Plus” platform was widely utilized by healthcare professionals for learning and ordering J&J products. It was the first platform to be transformed into the new digital branding. Our duty began by dissecting the structure and functionality of the J&J Academy Plus platform.

Challenges & Opportunities

The project started with a heuristic and functional audit of multiple websites under the Kenvue pro/Academy Plus umbrella, and the identification of various design patterns across platforms.

Heuristic evaluation was necessary to define usability and scope.

This review helped me build user flows and patterns for the main user demographics: doctors and pharmacists. The PMs then could define the project scopes and deliverables. A fellow UI designer and I started to uncover the required scope of the component library and design system. We also performed “technical” research into Design System variations, comparing methodologies (we picked Atomic Design) and maintenance products (we used Storybook).

DEsign iterations

Since Visual Branding already existed, we found it easier to skip the grey-box wire-framing phase, and design the layouts using the actual design elements. Iterating with stakeholders process was important for the concept designs and technical decisions, which in turn, had a major influence on the outcomes. Ensuring the concepts aligned with both the brand’s vision and the users' needs, the designed components aimed to create a flexible design system suitable for implementation across global websites and services.

Components Library

We proceeded to solidify the foundational component library, encompassing all the UI components, grids, spacing, typography, and states. This phase also included developing clickable prototypes of the new website, and began documenting each component’s use cases on Storybook.

Project Outcomes

The successful hand-off of the project secured a continued relationship with Kanvue, signing contracts to transform other digital platforms used by millions of users world wide.
